Do you believe in signs? Do you believe that when something is mentioned whether it be big or small, has a purpose? In Greys Anatomy, all words have a purpose. Maybe that is one of the major reasons I love this show. Words speak life, and truth, and words of affirmation to anyone can change a persona life. But what about those words you don’t notice, do you believe they are hints for the future. In the world of Greys Anatomy, it wasn’t until I watched the entire season 3 times that I realized all words have a purpose. Have you ever made the joke “If you were in a plane crash…”, or “That’s about as likely as a plane crash…” Well in Greys Anatomy, those little jokes are signs of the future. In season 8 in an episode titled “Flight,” I will never forget the overwhelming sense of being “fooled” when I watched it. I thought the episode was a dream or even a nightmare. Everything was going so well and the Doctors were all off to save another patient in a different state. No one knew they would never make it. Yes, Meredith Grey was in an actual plane crash. Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Mark, Arizona, and Lexi were all in a plane crash. When Meredith Grey comes to the realization of what has occurred, her first instinct is to search for Derek and Cristina, as well as her little sister Lexi. That is after she pulls a shard of steel from her leg and checks to make sure she is not bleeding out from the gash on her head. While Arizona is screaming in shock, Cristina is looking for her shoe, Mark is stumbling around, and Derek and Lexi are nowhere to be found, Meredith is wondering how all of this has happened. Once Meredith and Cristina compose themselves, they set out to look for Derek and Lexi when suddenly, they heard a constant thumping sound from a far. What is that thumping, Lexi hitting a rock on a plane that is on top of her entire body. When Cristina and Meredith approach her, they realize that her fate is inevitable. While Meredith runs to go find Derek, Cristina realizes Lexi does not have much time with her crushed pelvis, and internal bleeding. When Derek stumbles to Meredith with a near amputated hand, Meredith and Derek rushed back only to find Lexi has died. Now that Lexi has died, Mark will not leave her side but, it isn’t by choice that he cannot move. Mark has internal bleeding into the chest and suffering from cardiac tapenade and needs the pressure from around his heart to be removed. But without tools and stranded in the woods, what do you do? You rub germ killer on a spray bottle tube and shove the tube into the side of his chest. Once Mark is stable, he lays on Arizona to help keep pressure on nearly severed leg, Derek rest next to Meredith with his crushed hand, and Meredith and Cristina sit next to each other to watch the diminishing fire. Little did they know, it would take 4 days to be rescued. In the end, Lexi died, Mark is near death and all suffer from PSD. But, she survives, again. What about when the worst of the worst is joked about. Like when people say “It couldn’t get any worse.” I believe that is a view into the future too. Just one season later, Meredith is pregnant and a serious of unfortunate events happen, almost like a perfect storm. “I had this bad ass professor in med school. She seemed invincible. Then, one day, she needed her gallbladder out and the surgery killed her. Her platelets stopped clotting, she bled out on the table. Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. Surgeons have a name for it. We call it a perfect storm. Funny, never thought it would happen to me.”-Meredith Grey. At the end of season 9, not only is Meredith Pregnant but, she is in the middle of a super storm. While in labor, her baby is face up and is needing to be birthed by C-Section. However, the lights are out and with only a flashlight and hope, the baby is birthed by C-Section and the baby is rushed to the intensive care unite and treated for low oxygen. But, what does that mean for Meredith? She now lays on the table with the lights out with blood pouring from her IV and an intern trying to close her abdomen. As Shane, the intern, is told by Meredith to open her back up and fix the bleed, he continues to do so alone and with the lights out. As Meredith loses consciousness it seems as though her fate will be to never meet her new born child. But, when Shane fixes the bleed from her spleen, all hope is restored and Meredith lived for another day to meet her baby. Although Meredith has lived through many life changing situations, It has yet to stop. Now in season 13, Meredith continues to beat the odds and I would encourage you to check out the links below and one of my Greys Anatomy Diagnosis videos to learn more about the life and almost death of Meredith Grey.
